Generational Change at CIPRA International

After seven eventful years at the helm of CIPRA International, Kaspar Schuler is retiring, well deserved. His former deputy, Jakob Dietachmair, takes over as Executive Director, while Magdalena Holzer, a long-standing project manager at CIPRA, becomes the new deputy director.

Kaspar Schuler joined CIPRA International in 2018. Under his leadership, numerous milestones were achieved: the transformation of the Netzwerkstatt Alpen in Schaan/LI into a tastefully renovated office building, and a comprehensive declaration on sustainable water management under the Alpine Convention. Schuler and his team also made significant contributions to Alpine policy and successfully navigated challenging circumstances – from the COVID-19 crisis to a new EU Commission prioritizing industrial interests over climate protection, to Switzerland actively deregulating spatial planning and nature conservation laws.

"Especially today, it cannot be about 'my country, my house, my salary, my advancement'," says Kaspar Schuler. "It is about mindfulness, curiosity, and the power of collaboration. Those who share gain more than those who hoard. This spirit flows through CIPRA and this team in Schaan – this spirit has carried and continues to carry me," the Swiss national reflects on his motivation over the years.

Continuity and experience in the succession

Jakob Dietachmair has been with CIPRA for twelve years, serving as Deputy Director since 2021. In addition to his long-standing experience in areas such as sustainable tourism and mobility, the Austrian has been actively engaged in political advocacy in recent years. His expertise and commitment to trans-Alpine cooperation make him the ideal candidate to lead the organization. "It is important for me, as a voice for nature, to foster the health and safety of people in the Alps. This way, we can preserve our unique living environment, in the heart of Europe, for current and future generations."

Magdalena Holzer has been with CIPRA since 2014. As a trained interpreter, she brings strong linguistic and intercultural skills as well as extensive project management experience to the Alpine-wide network. "I want to continue building bridges between people and stay close to their everyday reality, especially where they work with nature on a daily basis. I am familiar with the challenges for example in mountain agriculture and tourism because I grew up in this environment."

With this personnel reorganization, CIPRA International continues its successful work for cross-border, sustainable development in the Alpine region while strengthening its strategic direction for the coming years.
