Furthering the cross-border restoration of nature

A workshop organised by the Alpine Convention has initiated concrete steps for cross-border nature restoration. The aim is to define common priorities across national borders.

In September 2025, a workshop on the restoration of nature in the Alpine region was organised by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) for the Alpine Biodiversity Board (ABB) of the Alpine Convention. A text on cross-border cooperation for the national restoration plans was drafted, which can be adapted by those member states that need to meet the Nature Restoration Regulation. Thanks to the commitment of numerous stakeholders that participated in the EU public consultation, such as CIPRA and the Secretariat of the Alpine Convention, a corresponding field for transnational cooperation was included in the standardised format of the EU national restoration plans. For the Alpine Convention and CIPRA, it is essential to view restoration from an Alpine-wide perspective. Non-EU states such as Switzerland can also play a part and are to be included: at the workshop, specific geographical areas were proposed for cooperation , including cross-border river ecosystems such as the Ticino landscape between Switzerland and Italy, where CIPRA is actively contributing to restoration as part of its environmental responsibility programme. “Restoring nature in the Alps requires more than national efforts – it demands true cross-border cooperation. Only by working together can we secure the resilience and biodiversity of this unique mountain region in the long term”, says Serena Arduino, Vice-President of CIPRA International.
