When nature loses, we all lose
In Europe, decades-old laws that protect people and nature exist. Powerful polluting industries and political groups with vested interests are on a mission to dismantling them - trading our health and future for foreign profit and power. These reckless attacks threaten our access to safe drinking water, affordable food, clean air, and increase pollution linked to cancer, respiratory diseases, and other serious health risks. When nature’s protections are weakened, everyone suffers. Without exception.
That is why our colleagues from the European Environmental Bureau started the petition HandsOffNature. We need you to act now and make your voice impossible to ignore! We demand that European leaders defend the fundamental laws that serve people and nature, not polluters’ interests.
Strong EU nature protection laws are also crucial for people living in the Alps because Alpine ecosystems are highly interconnected and do not stop at national borders. For Alpine communities, healthy nature is not an abstract goal but the basis of everyday life and safety. Intact forests, wetlands and soils help prevent floods, landslides and water shortages, provide clean drinking water, and reduce the impacts of climate change.
Local economies in the Alps also depend directly on a healthy environment. Sectors such as sustainable tourism, agriculture and forestry rely on attractive landscapes, biodiversity, clean air and water. Undermining these natural assets through deregulation in the name of short-term economic interests risks damaging long-term prosperity.
