- On the second weekend in August, mountain-top fires will burn again throughout the Alpine region, symbolising solidarity for protecting the Alps’ natural and cultural heritage. These fires of solidarity burn every year as emblems for the preservation of the Alps’ natural and cultural heritage.
Since 1998, the fires and other activities in the Alps have brought together people who are committed to a sustainable future for this unique region.
In 2025, the focus is on the Via Alpina
The 2,000-kilometre, long-distance hiking trail connects all eight Alpine countries and is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The Via Alpina is a prime example of sustainable tourism in remote mountain areas, allowing walkers to discover different cultures, landscapes and languages in an incredibly diverse area such as the Alps.
Anyone who wants to take action this year for the future of the Via Alpina, sustainable tourism and many other related issues is warmly invited to organise an event, be it on the Via Alpina or elsewhere in the Alps.
Events not directly linked to the Via Alpina are, of course, also welcome: since climate change, glacier retreat and extreme weather are not only changing the footpaths, but also landscapes and livelihoods in general. The events and fires across the Alps on 9 August are meant to remind us how valuable and vulnerable our Alps are, and that their protection requires joint, international efforts.
Get involved, become part of the movement and organise your own event on 9 August – with or without a fire.
If you also want to organise an event, we will be happy to provide you with Via Alpina materials and information and publicise your initiative – not only on this website, but also on Via Alpina as well as via social media.
